Dolphin Tale Helps Fund Aquarium Expansion

An attorney by profession, Gary Fernald also serves as treasurer of the Island Estates Civic Association. In this role, Gary Fernald follows the financial aspects of local projects such as the CMA aquarium expansion.

Featured in the Hollywood hit films Dolphin Tale 1 and Tale 2, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium provides key rescue and rehabilitation efforts for marine animals. Dolphin Tale follows the true story of Winter, a dolphin who lost her tail and the boy who urged scientists to develop a prosthetic appendage. Inspiring to people with and without physical challenges, the movie sparked a sequel in 2014.

Thanks to the public attention that these movies have inspired, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) has drawn even more resources but also more visitors than ever before. The Aquarium has responded to the public’s generous support with plans to build a new downtown facility with a visitors center and educational facilities. The project aims to maximize cost efficiency while emphasizing the Aquarium’s rescue work. The Aquarium’s island location remains open during construction planning and offers trolley and boat services for visitor convenience.
